It would be interesting to start a discussion about rigs.
Looking at the top boats at the moment. No rig in particular is winning.
Some of them are quite different. From what I can see the Irwin/Willets
rigs is a stiff high aspect ratio one (glider wing?) and the CST/Alexander
rig is a flexable automatic one (birds wing?).
Which one do people think will come out on top?
I really like the idea of less string to fiddle with and the construstion
of the CST mast seems very clever.
A proposal was put to the UK Committee for a trial of rotating masts.
Although we don't think it is quite time yet, I am very keen to see it
happen and it would be interesting to hear people's opinions of when would
be a good time to investigate (3 years, 5 years or never: get back to gaff
rigs).
Richard Woof as done some development of a rotating wing mast for the
RS800 and although they aren't going to use it in production it proved to
be very fast and they got round most of the technical problems but it is
more expensive.
