O.K.
So, with all the rumor & speculation around, I thought it might be wise to
offer an insight from one who has sailed with a self-tacking jib for some
time now. Our new boat 'Bullet' AUS14 was designed, built, owned & sailed
by David Lugg. The jib is as far forward and up as legal, and mast back to
allow a near identical jib area as on our previous boat (No self-tacker). I
sheet from the windward gunwale (rotating cleats) so the sheet is always at
hand. So it is easy to achieve a self-tacker without sacrificing
fore-triangle area. As far as racing goes, as a crew, it's just sheer
magic. I can go from wire to wire on tacks without the need to touch
anything (very quick!) and can concentrate on weight position as a priority
during tacks & jibes. But hey... I'm happy if no-one else goes in the
direction of self-tackers. I'd back us in a tacking duel to the line any
day...!
