Practice Race

Charles Stanley and Mo Gray from Great Britain put their stamp on the
competition by winning from Grant Geddes and Craig Watkin, from Australia,
on the water after a hard and tiring race with the wind speed topping 20
knots and large seas. The keen fleet took four attempts to start. The
lead was held to the first windward mark by Jonathon Pudney and Pete
Bagwell whom quickly swapped places with Stanley and Gray. Andy Fitzgerald
and Chris Turner worked hard to briefly lead after Stabley and Gray
capsized but but the World Champions produced a fast recovery to lead from
New Zealanders Grant Bourke and Nick Willets after Pudney, Bagwell,
Fitzgerald and Turner swam. The fast Australians produced good results by
consistently working thorugh the fleetalong with Roddy Bridge and Jerry
Eplett until their jib halyard broke. The hardest luck stories of the
race were Bourke and Willets who's mainsail fell down just before the
finish robbing them of second place along with Richard Ekberg and David
Hayter who lost a top ten place after a trapeze wire broke at the finish
line.

The finishing order was completely rearranged because Stanley and Gray
were disqualified for a starting infringement leaving Geddes/Watkin (Aus)
the winners with Elsworth/Perry (Aus) second Irwin/Oshlack (Aus) third,
Coutts/Fox (Aus) fourth, Fitzgerald/ Turner (GB) fifth and Alexander/Hart
sixth.
