Grant - I too am in the situation that I have a 49er for recreational use.
Don't really like it, not least because nothing seems to work well on it. Also
it is like sailing a blancmange compared to a 14. It might be fast but feels
really wobbly to me, not in the tippy sense but in the response sense. Whilst
this points towards "get a 14 then", the financial loss on a 14 is too much to
bear. Don't know about rest of the world, but 14s in UK seem to get hit rather
like cars i.e. lose half their value in 3 years. I am fortunate in that for
the 2 years of 14 fun I have had have been largely financed by the owner for
the boat aspects of it...
To my mind, there must be lots of people who, having tried the 49er experience
are looking for a fun, and more open class in which to sail i.e. 14s - BUT if
_I_ can't be convinced to buy a 14 then how can we hope to attract these people
from outside the class. They are just going to buy older 49ers (I got mine for
UKP 6k which is less money than you'll pay for an Ovi 1!!!) and soon there will
be a decent "amatuers" domestic circuit.
