Re aerofoil rigging; stuck the bow of the Taipan 4.9 in (for non Aussies,
the T 4.9 is probably the quickest 16' cat afloat, just 5 yardstick points
slower than the old Tornado) the other day in about 25 knots. Left the blunt
end of the boat pretty quickly and hit the windward stay with the back of my
head and neck at a speed (conservatively estimated) of 25,000 km/h.
What would it have been like if the wire had been aerofoiled and I'd hit the
pointy, aft-facing end? I believe that some US beach cats carried
plastic-coated rigging because of some very nasty accidents when people were
flung into the round rigging; hitting pointy stuff would be worse.
Yeeoouuuch!!!!!
Mind you, I suppose eficient aero rigging would be rotating to face the
apparent wind, but how fast would it react to a quick stop?
PS- if ISAF want crash helmets for skiffies, would they want BMX style body
armour for those with aero rigging?
