Subject: The Warming Pan ( what nearly happened)
<p>hello all,
The Warming Pan is a traditional start to the season in the UK however this
year it was quite warm, no sleet or snow and temperatures of upto 12 C. The
racing was on a Trapezoid course in Southampton Water/ Solent which is a
fairly open stretch of water albeit a bit busy with shipping and Keel boat
racing. The weekend was of course a big one in the foil spotters calendar
with the new RMW and Specialized foils being used by Rob Greenhaugh and
James Fawcett respectively.
Saturday's racing was dominated by Rob Greenhaugh and Dan Johnson with 2
bullets who won both races comfortably. Behind there was close racing with
place changes on each leg between James Fawcett/ Chris Turner , Roddy
Bridge/ Douglas Patterson and me, Adrian Murphy with Damian Ash ( Charles
Stanley being at Tattersalls buying some ponies, allegedly). Whilst Rob was
in a league of his own in speed terms no other boats with 'foils' appeared
to be faster than usual.
Sunday was a bit windier, yet again however the fleet managed to be late to
the start, the 'soft' race officer waiting for the majority to get there!
Not much point having foils or the latest bits if you can't get to the start
is there? Rob again won this race which was in Force 4 with big chop the
main excitement in this race was when my trapeze string snapped dropping me
in the water half way down a full on run! By the time I surfaced Charles (
Returned from the Pony buying) was some 75 metres away carrying on without
me! This allowed Bridge and Fawcett through for 2nd and 3rd. Charles and I
left the Track to sail home feeling disappointed but......
On the way home we came across another retired boat and mugged him for his
trapeze wires! Thank you Tom Mehew for capsizing removing your wires and
giving them to us, they even refused a beer for their troubles
afterwards!!!!!! Rob was feeling his age and went home allowing someone else
to win a race for a change. Roddy and Douglas lead at the first mark
followed by Charles and me, with Mark Upside-Down and Ian Mitchell in third
( with RMW foiled rudder). The first run was decisive with Charles and I
choosing a good lay line for the leeward mark which allowed us to set up a
good lead as the others over stood the layline. Mark and Ian finally took
2nd after a tight race when Roddy and Douglas trawled the kite at the last
mark.
Everyone I talked to enjoyed the racing but was exhausted all promising to
do more fitness training...... next winter.
