Andy Paterson tried a Moth style bottom of rudder T foil a while back...
AIUI he discovered that:-
If you set it to pull down (like a Moth) the boat goes all doggy and slams
into every wave
If you set it to be neutral it doesn't really do much other than make the
boat sluggish going over waves
If you set it to lift then the boat is completely unmanageable on anything
other than a beat...
The Bieker foil is very much a different beast of course, but its certainly
not going to be a fire and forget job which is always best with the Cherub
workload... The fact that it in Andy's tests it was apparently less
successful on the end of the blade might be worrying for those who believe
that the transom wave interaction is irrelevant. On the subject of wave
systems I've noticed that on very fine bowed boats - my 14ft singlehander
for instance - you don't get any surface visible bow wave at all, which is
really quite bizarre... My understanding is that Frank Bethwaite has also
noticed this phenomenum, but neither of us has an explanation...
