Phil Chadwick writes about the lower than expected turnout at the 14 Euro
champs...

"Does anybody else think this may be a reflection on the 'Hydrofoil'
rudder?"

In a word-- No. Europe, with GBR in the lead is forging ahead, several
production designs out there now.

If you want one design, sail one design.
If you want development sail development

The I14 class is all about innovation and development

The hydrofoil rudder is an excellent, if troublesome innovation, but much
smaller an issue than Assy, kites or double trapezes or fully flying boats
as far as changing boats go. The legitimate proposals for width increase
and moving the racks aft are what some of the class think is the way
forward. Yes, I know some of us don’t want to change, others are keen to go
faster. Please vote your mind, but remember everybody in the class is here
for the love of 14 sailing. Just because somebody has a different vision
for the future for the 14s does not mean they are in any way out to get you
or wreck your sailing. It just means they have what they think is a good
idea and want everybody to play along. I know the Southern Hemisphere has
had stable rules for 20 or so years, but what happened when the class
changed back in the day? If we had frozen the design in 1934 for the
northers or 1897 for the southers how many boats would be sailing now? I’m
sure lots of people were loudly protesting the unholy change to dacron sails
and aluminum spars as the “end of the class” in the 50’s. Deal with it

And no we don’t have a rudder yet and yes the US Nats are in two weeks,
dammit.

Yrs vry trly
