[I14] UK- Hayling Island open meeting

Jubilee week end saw 25 International 14s converge at HISC for the Hayling
Hull open meeting held along side the 'B14' Europeans with 23 entries and
the Musto Skiff Nationals with about 12 entries ( a POW winning helm and
crew were seen in this fleet, no names Kevin and Ian). Another interesting
fact was that in three days the 14s did 8 races, twice as many as a normal
POW week!

HISC put on a marvellous regatta with good courses very close to the
infamous Chichester Harbour mouth, remember those long two sail reaches of
the 2000 Gallon? With race start times carefully arranged around The World
Cup matches which were being screened in the club house, so many thanks to
Tim Hancock and all at HISC.

Any way the sailing, Saturday saw 2 races in a steady 10 to 15 knots, Race
one saw Bridge/Patterson, Stanley/Murphy, Upton-Brown/Mitchell ( yes brother
of the 'specimen' Star crew) and Penman/Bastow all at the front of the fleet
in some very close racing around the 3 lap windward - Leeward course. As the
regatta progressed these names where always in the vanguard although some
other stars shone from time to time. As in race 2 where Paul Vine and Adam
May started to show some good speed with the new North Sails.

Sunday was much lighter and was really dominated by Stanley/Murphy with
2,3,3 and Upton-Brown/Mitchell with 3,1,8 however Andy Fitzgerald and Damian
Ash had both been allowed out of the house and put in a solid 1,5,2 just a
shame they were too tired to sail the next day!

Monday dawned completely calm and foggy however the breeze soon started
building allowing the fleet to sail 3 great races in winds on 15 to 20 knots
with very clean ( for Hayling) 3 to 4 foot waves. This was to develop into a
battle for the regatta between Stanley/Murphy and Upton-Brown/Mitchell who
were separated by 1 point over night. Stanley and Murphy started well
winning the first race from Upton-Brown and Mitchell. However in the second
race a knotted kite halyard relegated them to 4th allowing Roger Ewart-Smith
and Bruce Grant to win by a good margin. Race 8, saw Upton-brown and
Mitchell in trouble when an abortive Port Tack start saw them capsize on the
start line rather than sink Roddy Bridge. As Stanley and Murphy sailed off
to win this race Upton-Brown desperately battled back, aided by many sad,
weak persons who started giving up as yet another pitchpole wiped them out
in the tricky conditions. This let Upton -Brown and Mitchell get back to 4th
out of 5 finishers!

As a result these top two boats were tied on 13 points, after 2 discards,
both having 2 firsts but it was Upton-Brown and Mitchell who had two seconds
and won the regatta.
