Right on!
Sailing should first and foremost be fun. Our younger generation are looking
for excitement and the older config boats jus did not have it .... today's
gennakers, racks and light weight equipment put the dinghy back in
contention.
With the right promotion and "IMAGE" the sport will become more popular.
So instead of looking only at the reasonms why it isn't as popular as we
think it should be how about some good old get out and extoll the pleasure
of sailing;
Good fleet depth gives good sailing right through the ranks and lraces
within the race develop. Fun at all levels. One can get satisfaction from
finishing at any position if you feel you sailed a good race. Fun cycle
rides that turn into "races" such as our Cape Argus Tour attract in excess
of 35,000 cyslists all out to match or better their personal times/ bvest
ride performance.
Sailing can be the same.
Cost is also relative.
Where costs become linked to international factors they are then going to
afect the local folk. eg craft built in South Africa would have a similar
material cost to those built in AUS or NZ, but the labour content may be a
little less expensive. It all depends on where tmaterials are sourced.
Leisure time is a controlling factor; SA has a 21 day-a-year holiday package
norm. Any more time off comes out of your pay packet; so time becomes the
limit. That impacts on class numbers and turnout figures.
And families bite into sailing time until they get old enough to join in ...
if they want o that is
Seems its the same anywhere you go
Cheers
Doug
