Actually the 6th placed boat didn't have a foiled rudder - whats more we
don't have racks, flexi-top mast, or recent sails!
I think I can also say that we don't feel we've got the most out of our boat
yet - we were still learning throughout the Europeans, both in terms of boat
set-up and in avoiding tactical mistakes at mark roundings etc.
So having followed the recent discussions on the list, I think there is far
to much concern about technological innovations and not enough about good
sailing. It is perfectly possible to have competitive 14 racing without all
the latest kit - in fact I would say we got better, closer racing than (say)
the top three boats who were well ahead and spaced apart for most races.
Also some thoughts on cost: In the UK job market there is often close
correlation between salary and number of hours worked and general stress at
work, hence those with less disposable income potentially have more time to
spend sailing. Is time on the water not as important as the latest kit?
Taking this to the international scene, I believe it is usual to have 8
weeks holiday/year in Germany whereas 4/5 weeks is usual in the UK and only
2 in the US (anyone like to comment on Australia/NZ/RSA?). Surely this must
make more difference than economic factors?
