As an "old" 14 sailor, sitting here in my office while other "young" sailors
have the time to go to Denmark, I am a bit fed up with the hundreds of
e-mails which have been filling my screen in the past weeks. In the hope of
reducing the number of such mails, I would just like to make two
observations:
If you change the rules by the procedure provided for in the rules
themselves, you are not changing the nature of the game. Everybody who buys a
boat should know the rules, including the rules for changing the rules (and
yes, the rules also allow for the amendment of the rules on how to change the
rules). We have all just received the voting material for the rule changes
proposed by the US and Australia. It is interesting to see that the most
vocal defendants of the status quo are also proposing changes and therefore
seem to accept the concept as such ....

Our rules require clear majorities for a change. I suggest that we argue the
facts and then let the vote decide instead of whining about the evil
influence of old sailors and rich wankers (who also have only one vote each).
cheers
Philipp (SUI 17)

Betreff: Re: [I14] change = good or bad?

I agree to what Peter sais.
I sailed the Europeans last week and for the first time I saw the best
European
14-Foot-Sailors.
I must say (without wanting to get too personal):
Somehow, 14 sailors are relatively old.
Where are the youngsters?
I know some youngsters, they bought a nice "1996"- boat 2 years ago, they are
very proud of it, at least they were, bought it with there last bit of money.
But how long will this last?
Everytime I see them standing besides a Morri10, Ovi3 or Bieker, I see there
hearts bleed.
They will not put wider racks on their boat, they will not buy foiled
rudders,
they will not succeed in making their boat any lighter.
Nobody keeps the "construction"-Freaks from trying to get the boat faster,
I know they are important for the class and future Rule-Changes.
But did you know that:
It`s allowed to build and sail boats with hydrofoils all over the Hull,
but take them off when you race against the others.
It`s allowed to build 65Kg-Boats,
but put the lead back in when you race against the others.
It`s allowed to make the racks wider,
but slide them back to 1830 mm when you race against the others.
else, the youngsters and "not everyday-sailors" will get frustrated.
