Maybe Chris Hanke can chime in here - since he moved from 14's to 5o5's a
couple years back.

I believe he spent about the same amount for a 5o5 that any of us would
spend for a 14.

So - it may/may not be cost

I think it has more to do with the depth of the competition in the west
coast 5o5 fleet

btw - for the record, I do no advocate any change to the basic parameters of
the class. I'm interested in the aussie wing test rule, but concerned that
it may be difficult to administer. The sail restriction rule seems fine.
I'm building some foils in my garage, once I get around to it.

Joel, you asked :

"I noticed earlier this year that the local 5o5 fleet has
grown significantly, reversing the overall trend. Does
anyone have any insight into reasons?"

The answers, I would have thought, are obvious :

1. The 505 class has limited it's rules, so new participants are not facing
a moving target in terms of it's rules every year.
2. They 505's have limited their construction/building techniques and
materials, so new participants are not facing boat obsolescence every year
or so.
3. Due to both of the above, their class has a calculable "upper limit" on
expense, such that new participants are not scared off by a bottomless pit
of expense.

If the 505 case is not ringing alarm bells with you guys over there, we're
all in deep trouble, 'cause we're all in the same boat...

Helmy

Phil,

I feel compelled to chime in with Lisa here. Mostly, I
like the 14 fleet because the boats are fun, and the guys
are supportive of newbies. So I don't think many of the
guys who are already "hooked" are going to hang it up
because they can't win. I think what *is* happening, in
the 14 fleet and in sailing generally in the US, is a
decline in participation across the board. So we get fewer
newbies. That's worth worrying about, I think, but I
guess I've long thought that outreach and assistance are
the ways to help, and that gear depreciation (i.e. get a
great boat for cheap) doesn't hurt per se.

I noticed earlier this year that the local 5o5 fleet has
grown significantly, reversing the overall trend. Does
anyone have any insight into reasons?
