Thank-you for your message about the 14 World's in Japan. I have sailed 14s
in Japan on three occasions (including the Worlds') and can say without
reservation that the Japanese Fleet will provide an outstanding event in
2003. They have traveled and supported 14 World Champ' events since their
fleet first started. Their presentation at the World Council meeting in Beer
was professional and informational. They deserve the support of the class
and the participants will receive gracious hospitality, a well managed event
on and off the water, and exposure to a rich and beautiful culture. I for
one like the idea of a shorter time-- We all look forward to viewing the web
site in April. Cheers and beers to you,
Andy Bates

Subject: Worlds Japan 2003
<p>>Hi,
>We are sorry to hear that some of 14sailors have a fear for the cost of
>Worlds in Japan 2003 mainly based on a sentiment which seems to be
>incorrect.
>Let me clarify the facts and intentions as to the cost issue of worlds
2003.
>
>It is true and we do understand that expected costs of staying in Japan is
>higher in general. The biggest reason made us hesitate to stand for Worlds
>had been the lack of confidence for us to manage the cost foreign
>perticipants within a reasonable level.
>However, as was presented in Beer, we found the way to tackle this issue.
>One is the sponsorship. We secured a group comapny of Panasonic which owns
>a huge resort complex, Wakayama Marina City, where the worlds will be
>hosted. We estimate their in-kind sponsorship will enable us to manage the
>entree fee at the level of US$300 per a boat.
>The other is shortening the preriod of event. We admit the cost of
>accommodation is higher and cheaper options such as camping may be
difficult
>to find in Japan.
>Estimated accomodation cost is around US$60 pppn. including breakfast, say
>staying in Japanese style hotel situated in the neearby hot spring villege.
>Our proposed period is 9 days' series, from Saturday to Sunday, including
>team racing. This period seems to be two third of usual ones, accordingly
>total cost of accommodation will be reduced by two thirds (in other words,
>equivalent to US$40 pppn.)
>From my exprice perticipating in every worlds since 1987, I personally feel
>above basic conditions are not less than a match for others.
>Off course we will work hard to top up other benefits such as free beer and
>discouted social events etc. Since availability of additional sponsorship
>depends on the attractiveness of the event to the ponsors e.g. number of
>countries and perticipants, I would say your posstive perticitaion will
>benefit yourself.
>Our CIO Mr. Ishida is planning to set up the Worlds website in April after
>he finish his dissertation.
