Hi,

Let me try to help, though many others in our class may have more knowledge
or different opinions on some of your questions.

1. The lower shroud counteracts the force of the boom vang (kicker) and
controls low mast bend.

2. Rig config. Over the last few years, the Willets mast, which is
relatively stiff, with Irwin or Hyde sails has been very successful. But
Grant Geddes won the last worlds with a bendy-top CST mast and Alexander
sails, a combination which appears to be better at self-adjusting in
windier conditions. Many people are in the process of switching to the CST
rig. The worlds in England in June, which may have more variable conditions
than the last worlds in Melbourne, should provide an excellent test as to
which rig performs best in which conditions.

3. Tube diameters: masts: 2"-3.5", though usually close to 3". Poles: 3"
and larger, Paul Bieker's pole design is well engineered, and tapers from
about 5" down to 2".

4. Spreaders: without looking at my mast, spreader length is anywhere from
12"-18", angle is perhaps 120-140 degrees for lowers and 100-120 for uppers.

5. Rise of floor. The rule intends to limit how narrow boats are on the
waterline. So, take a cross section of the hull 7 feet back from the bow.
Draw a horizontal line passing through the lowest point of the cross
section (the keel). Draw a line parallel to the first line, 8" above it.
The hull must be at least 44" wide at this point.

6. I believe the 1997 rule is current, though the class is currently voting
on some minor changes.

7. Other weights: Centerboard: 6 lb. Rudder: 4 lb. (the blade only)
Mast+rigging : 20-30 lbs.

Hope that helps!
