Roll up, roll up for the 2000 UK International 14 racing season! This is
now on the UK website, at http://gbr.i14.org/calendar/ - or an
unformatted version is at the bottom of this mail...
With the World Championships in the UK in June, this year offers a busy
early season before the Worlds themselves, then returning to our more
usual format in the Autumn. In response to demand, we're also offering
more team racing. We return to Hayling for the first time in a while,
and also have a new venue in Scotland - Port Edgar, on the Firth of
Forth. We hope to get some of the overseas Worlds entrants down to our
old favourite Garda to see why we like it so much. But of course the
Worlds themselves are the key event, and preparation is already underway
- new crews are pairing up, new boats are building - and this means more
boats will soon be available on the secondhand market. So if you have a
14, get your act together and let's see you out there. If you haven't
got a 14, start talking to the builders or see
http://gbr.i14.org/forsale/ for a list of what's available now!
Here's an outline of the season:
- The brass monkeys can keep in practice via the winter series at Queen
Mary (already underway)
- Start the open meeting season proper at Hamble with the traditional
Warming Pans. The King & Queen and Mad Jack nightclub awaitO
- Take in the usual Allegro Trophy at Queen Mary - but leave your boat
at the club for the week afterwards for the first of the followingO
- Test your team racing skills and enhance your boat handling with two
team racing events:
- 2 boat teams (random pairs, i.e. different teams for each race -
just turn up, no need to find a partner beforehand) at Queen Mary;
- 4 boat teams at Itchenor - need to sort yourselves into teams
beforehand for this one.
Both events will be a series of many short races and should have
full on-the-water umpiring - serious stuff!
- After Easter at Itchenor, get yourself into the UK Worlds teams via
the selection weekend on 6&7 May - but don't turn up if you're not
serious about being in the teams if selected!
- Then hit the wavy stuff - Hayling, Beer, Garda - to prepare for the
Worlds. Garda is the week of the UK Bank Holiday, and half term for many
schools, so make a week of it, take the family, but be sure to book
earlyO
- If you can't make Garda, we are invited to Derwent for the Mill Trophy
on the late May Bank Holiday weekend
- 10&11 June offers a choice - Itchenor (in the harbour on Saturday,
outside on Sunday) - or journey to North Berwick for sea sailing and
beautiful (with all due respect to Chichester Harbour) surroundings
- Then to Itchenor for the big pre-teams weekend, as the overseas guests
are arriving and all the teams are measuring in. Two races outside the
harbour on Saturday and the Gallon on Sunday (yes, it's high water!).
Who's on for 50 or 60 boats racing in this one?
- The big ones - the World Team Racing Challenge at Itchenor, the World
Championships at BeerO
- Then take it easy and make good the inevitable brownie point overdraft
over the summer. Geriatrics are invited to the Centenary Cup at Itchenor
(combined ages of helm and crew to be 100 or more). All ages can keep
their hand in with the Marvin Trophy at Shoreham
- Support the Northern fleet at Tynemouth for the Estuary Bowl on the
August Bank Holiday, leave your boats up north and return to Port Edgar
for the Scottish championships two weeks later (southerners, lets have a
special effort for these two events please)
- Return south for the Grapple Trophy at Warsash (nb pre-entry will be
required for this one), then the Autumn Pint and Trophy at Itchenor,
Myosotos Trophy at Oxford, and Itchenor Frostbite
- The winter series at Itchenor leads up to Christmas before it all
starts again in 2001O
- Finally, don't forget our travellers' trophy, the Crescendo Series -
five out of the seven marked events to count.
Cheers
Colin Smith
