9 Boats turned up for the first day of the Queen Mary Winter 14 series.
Racing was in 6-10 knots of breeze, stationary water and surprisingly warm
conditions.
Colin Smith and Peter Helm in 'Enormous Crocodile' took the first race by a
large margin from Julian Pearson and Louise Hickey in 'Two Camels', with
Kimball Morrison and Richard Thorogood in 'Technotrousers' third. JP and LH
showed that a well sailed Penultimate can still mix it with the big rigs.
Tom Low and Caroline Gosford in 'Screamin' Sheila' missed the first race
despite Caroline's lightning dash back from the Folkestone ferry terminal
and a skiing holiday, but led much of the second after taking Dave Spragg
and Andy Loukes in 'Mouse Bidet' on the second beat. They had had to be
content with third though, after a gallant but ultimately misguided
expedition to the right-hand corner of the last beat failed to pay off,
letting Dave/Andy and Colin/Peter through to take 1st and 2nd respectively.
After an excellent lunch, the fleet reconvened for short course Supercup
racing, on a 2-lap windward/leeward course. The tone for the afternoon was
set when the entire fleet converged on the first mark simultaneously, and
after much place-changing Dave and Andy took the first race from Martin
Dixon and Neil Chamberlain in 'English Rose' with Julian and Louise third.
The second race went to Kimball and Richard, with Dave and Andy just pipping
Julian and Louise for second place. After its stunning performance before
lunch, the Enormous Crocodile seemed somewhat lacking in acceleration, a
salutory warning to double-check those bungs before going afloat! In a dying
breeze which saw almost every boat leading at one point or another, the
third race saw Julian and Louise take line honours from Kimball and Richard,
with Colin and Peter third. With three boats tied for 1st overall, the
afternoon's winners on countback were Julian and Louise, proving the smaller
rig to be no disadvantage in short-course racing, with its emphasis on
boat-handling and tactics.
QM will be running the same combination of long and short course racing
every Sunday until the end of March. Several more boats have promised to
attend when they've finished skiing, and a special reduced Winter membership
fee has been negotiated for 14s. More details on http://gbr.i14.org/news.
