Shipping companies have been helping out with cut rates and even free
shipping going back to when Bermuda regularly hosted the 14 class and none
of us had to put stickers on our boats or sails. Since commercialism has
become ever more crass in form and substance, I can see where an
acknowledgement of their service could be discreetly displayed. I'd prefer a
cap with their logo, but would be willing to allow a small sticker on the
boat.
I'm appreciative of the efforts in the past to eliminate billboards from our
prettiest highways and will resist San Francisco Bay or Lake Garda or the
Gorge looking like Times Square or Las Vegas or downtown Melbourne. I don't
like to see advertising when I'm out daysailing or racing. Even commercial
ferry boats have the good taste to limit their names and logos, unlike city
buses that are now obnoxious rolling billboards.
I don't care if your father gives you money to sail, you're rich or you beg
for money; just don't garbage up the great outdoors with ugly signs.
If truth be known, any sponsor in his right mind would prefer that you
plaster his logo on your BMW or Saab where it can be seen by a lot more
people than out on the water. I just hope you don't park your car in my
neighborhood.
