The chat has increased , like I said I think that is a good thing. Allof
the reasoning that Paul has used for his design sounds good and you were
right ,the picture did make it look much bigger (As a good photo always
should). I agree with Ted Rogers though that you should allow it to
progress to the point where someone is a mile ahead before considering
to many restrictions. My Moth was exteremely hard to sail on the deep
runs because of the interction of the wave surface on the foils angle of
attack. As the boat was sailing at only a few knots more than the wave
speed at this angle, the foils got a slow and rather large angle of
attack change as the foil entered the back and exited the front of a
wave. This led to huge increases and decreases in the amount if lift
being produced at either side of the boat at the same time and created a
real bucking rollercoaster ride that was eventually controlled with
massive steering inputs to try to sail the boat in the smoothest bits of
water or enter waves at an angle where both foils hit the same wave at
the same time.Gybing was a real challange as the apparent was so hi the
boat would just float around up on the foil tips unless you really
jammed the helm down and slammed in a gybe.Which had problems of its
own.
Tacking on the other hand was a breeze as it could tack on a dime. With
the long thin hull lifted clear of the water the boat would turn like a
dinner plate in a pool of water( give it a go, goes round real easy ).
These were the main handeling probs that were encountered and Im sure
they can be solved with a little effort. The 14 has some other
challenges to overcome and due to sail plan and coordinating 2 persons.
But life on the edge is fun and the altitude sickness is not that bad.
The general feeling of the world council meeting in Perth was that the
moth should remain totaly un- restricted till there was a huge speed
advantage and deal with it then, It may be years off but could be just
around the corner.
